Our House Renovation:: the kitchen

I guess I should have started this blog a long time ago. We actually began the long process of renovating our home in 2006. Right after Charles and I got engaged, we knocked out the wall between the dining room and the kitchen. At that time, it was Charles' batchelor pad. Sorry these pics aren't really in chronological order.

The house had old plaster ceilings with pieces falling down. We put new sheetrock up in the kitchen, dining, & living room.
The lovely cabinets & stove.
I don't have the actual before picture of the wall, but this is right after we started the demo process.

This is the view looking from the dining room into the kitchen. You can see where the wall and door were. The kitchen seemed very small and cramped, and we rarely spent time in there, or in the dining room.
{You can see the old ceiling below}
We ripped out ALL of the trim, and had it replaced. Pulled up the old linoleum floor to find wood subfloor. We painted that.

New range!!
I painted the cabinets.

New fridge!!

This is the mud room. Used to be a porch with a screen door.
We decided to take down the dividing door, to open this space up into the kitchen. This is where our dogs eat, and keep their leashes, brushes, blankets, etc.
Still pre-trim, but floor is painted blue.

This was the floor after pulling up the linoleum. Charles had to sand them.

Another view of the mudroom. We replaced the screen door with this one from our wonderful neighbor, Jeff. Perfect for the pet door!

Now, here are some after shots. This is our rug from Ballard's Back Room in Atlanta.

Much better! We are very happy with our kitchen, and spend a lot of time in here, and sitting at the dining room table.{usually watching the small tv on the bottom left}

Wall color:: Glidden Ruffled Feathers
Trim:: Behr Glossy Bright White
Pantry Curtain:: Green Burlap from Ballard's Back Room

1st blog award!!!

Many thanks to Pk over at Room Remix for awarding my blog the Honest Scrap Award! This is very exciting, as it is my first blog award. I'm not exactly sure what the award is, but I'll take it!!

Here are the rules I must follow, upon receiving this award:
1) Say thanks and give a link to the presenter of the award.
2) Share "10 Honest Things" about myself.
3) Present this award to 7 others whose blogs I find brilliant in content and/or design, or those who have encouraged me.
4) Tell those 7 people they've been awarded HONEST SCRAP and inform them of these guidelines in receiving.

10 things about me::

1. I am a huge animal lover, especially my Lane, Sophie, Duke & Abe

2. Living in a small town really is fun. You always see friends whenever you go out!

3. I like to think I am a clean freak, but really I'm not.

4. Reading books is not really my thing, so I buy magazines instead {by the thousands} Especially home decor mags.

5. My husband, Charles, and I have the most fun when we have family time with our two Whippets.

6. He cooks, I clean...

7. I am thankful for all of my good friends. I really need to get better at calling the out of town ones more often! {Sorry, you know who you are!}

8. When I am sad, or just need time to think, I usually head to the barn to see my two horses. They really are therapeutic.

9. I am amazed each time I see my two nieces and two nephews. Can't believe how fast they are growing up!

10. Blogging is still so new to me, and I can't believe how fun it's turned out to be. My marriage is better because I don't talk decorating all the time with Charles. I have all of you for that now!

I would like to pass this award onto the following blogs that I really enjoy reading {I would love to include more}:

1. Odi et Amo

2. Chic Coles

3. Beach Cottage Love

4. Blue Hydrangea

5. Morning T

6. House of Turquoise

7. Haven & Home

my new favorite store!

I have been on a little blogging break. It all started with our trip to St. Simons this past weekend. We had a great time relaxing, and eating good seafood. There was a little stress mixed in. One of our dogs is having some medical issues, so I have been a little preoccupied. We spent a lot of our weekend trying to nurse her back to health. I think she is secretly enjoying being carried around, and being handfed. Anyway, I thought I would blog tonight since tomorrow is a stressful day at the vet in Atlanta. That is, if the massive flooding will cease. It sounds like Atlanta is having a rough time tonight. Enough depressing news.
While at the beach I found my new favorite home store. I saw an ad that was so cute in one of the local magazies down there. It is called Dutchmans Designs, and it is located in the village. Despite my current spending freeze, my mom and I went to check it out. It was everything and more than I expected! This store has a great mix of different furniture styles. There is a huge coastal influence in the accessories. Also, tons of painted furniture. Again, I LOVED everything there. I only took two pictures of distressed paint, so I thought I would post some from their website.
They had this sofa in the store. I noticed the "please do not sit on the furniture" sign as I was standing up from this sofa...
I believe they had this chair, and also a matching loveseat in a darker mocha brown linen. I wanted to throw it in the back of my truck and head north.

As I mentioned, tons of painted furniture. Also, lots of cabinets with glass panes. This makes me proud of my tv cabinet purchase earlier this year for our living room. It is similar, but lower and longer. I plan to post pics of my living room one of these days.

Saw a cute headboard.

Oh, and on the website, they have many different furniture collections. Most of my favorite pieces are from the Cottage Collection. This dresser below is from the Provence Collection. That must be why it reminds me of something from Wisteria

I do not like this chair in this red, but I think it is one of the chairs I took a close up picture of.

Just an arm shot. I really like the paint. It was greyish with white.

After we left the store, and were walking by later on, I snapped this pic with my camera phone. It was right by the entrance. Again, love the paint color.
I have an old dresser that is calling out to be painted like this.

After leaving a place where I wanted one of everything, we went next door to an antique store. I am horrible at blogging, because I can't remember the name. I think it is St. Simons Antique Gallery and Gifts? In case you are there, it is located in the village next to Dutchmans.
This might have been my second favorite store. Saw another glass paned cabinet that looked exactly like mine, except that it was painted black. This store also had great coastal decor accessories. I guess it pays to shop at the beach if you are into coastal decor like me!
I grabbed a pic of this mirror. They had a grey one too. When I saw this teal/turquoise one I almost died. Maybe one day it will join our little living room....

even more Kmart finds!

I almost forgot about these. My post on Friday had the Country Living line of furniture at Kmart, but I also found some other deals. For months, I have been on the hunt for a very affordable upholstered headboard. I would really like to have a fully upholstered bed. Since I am into nailheads, I would love this one featured in this month's House Beautiful.
{I am working on transforming an existing headboard into an upholstered looking one, will post more on that later}

This one from Kmart could be a good economical version.
Tufted High Arch $545
I also like the squared off version.
Tufted $469

This one is a nice compromise between the high arch and the square. $445

I hope you all don't think I am obsessed with Kmart. All of these finds were very surprising to me. I am inteterested to know if any of the actual stores carry this stuff. Let me know if you see their new furniture in person, and how it looks!
I will be leaving town tomorrow, so may have to take a blogging break until next Monday. We will be in Saint Simons Island, so should have more house/real estate pictures to post.

Athens real estate

We had a successful game day Saturday in Athens. Charles and I weren't really in the mood to go to Athens after losing the first game. As soon as we got into Athens all of that changed. How could I have forgotten how fun a Saturday in Athens really is!! We now have a great tailgating spot, and were able to meet up with great friends.

I forgot my camera, so didn't get any cute house pics. There really are some great homes in Athens. Hopefully I will have pictures of some of our favorites by the end of football season.

While I was scoping out the real estate market, I found some really great looking homes. I found all of these on

I really like the look of the darker trim & built-in cabinet color.
